Interrogatives and exclamations

Questions

Questions in Spanish are indicated by question marks at the beginning and end of the question.   A rising intonation at the end of the sentence is used to indicate a question.

e.g. Está en la cocina - He is in the kitchen, ¿Está en la cocina? - Is he in the kitchen?

 

Common question words

Note that these question words all have accents and come at the beginning of the question.

¿A qué hora? What time? ¿A qué hora empiezan las clases? What time do classes start?
¿Adónde? Where... to? ¿Adónde fuiste de vacaciones? Where did you go to on holiday?
¿Cómo? What?   How? ¿Cómo te llamas? What are you called?
¿Con quién? With whom? ¿Con quién fuiste? Who did you go with?
¿Cuál? ¿Cuáles? Which (one)? Which (ones)? ¿Cuál quieres - la roja o la verde? Which one do you want - the red or the green?
¿Cuándo? When? ¿Cuándo vas a ir? When are you going to go?
¿Cuánto? How much? ¿Cuánto cuesta? How much does it cost?
¿Cuántos?  ¿Cuántas? How many? ¿Cuántas personas vienen? How many people are coming?
¿De dónde? Where... from? ¿De dónde eres? Where are you from?
¿Dónde? Where? ¿Dónde están los aseos? Where are the toilets?
¿Por qué? Why? ¿Por qué te gusta? Why do you like it?
¿Qué? What?   Which? ¿Qué prefieres? What do you prefer?
¿Quién? Who? ¿Quién es? Who is it?

 

Exclamations

Note that all these expressions have exclamation marks at the beginning and the end.

¡Cómo ha crecido! Look how he's grown! ¡Qué horror! How awful!
¡Cómo llueve! Look how it's raining! ¡Qué lástima! What a shame!
¡Qué día más bonito! What a lovely day! ¡Qué pena! What a shame!
¡Qué bien! How great! ¡Qué ruido! What a noise!
¡Qué cara tiene! What a nerve he has! ¡Qué va! No way!
¡Qué guay! How cool! ¡Qué vergüenza! How embarrassing!
