Formation

  1. Take the 'I' form of the present indicative.
  2. Remove the -o
  3. Add the 'opposite vowel' endings (-ar verbs have an -e, and -er/-ir verbs have an -a)
Examples of AR verbs      
hablo > habl visito > visit pienso > piens me levanto > levant
hable visite piense me levante
hables visites pienses te levantes
hable visite piense se levante
hablemos visitemos pensemos nos levantemos
habléis visitéis penséis os levantéis
hablen visiten piensen se levanten
       
Examples of ER/IR verbs      
bebo > beb tengo > teng puedo > pued me pongo > pong
beba tenga pueda me ponga
bebas tengas puedas te pongas
beba tenga pueda se ponga
bebamos tengamos podamos nos pongamos
bebáis tengáis podáis os pongáis
beban tengan puedan se pongan

 

Irregular present subjunctives

There are only 6 verbs which do not end in an -o in the 'I' form of the present indicative and therefore do not follow the above rule, these are:

dar - to give estar - to be haber - to have (auxiliary verb) ir - to go saber - to know ser - to be
dé esté haya vaya sepa sea
des estés hayas vayas sepas seas
dé esté haya vaya sepa sea
demos estemos hayamos vayamos sepamos seamos
deis estéis hayáis vayáis sepáis seáis
